An Expository Sermon on the Autobiography of Martin Luther | Romans 1:16-17

As Capitol Commons Reformed Church takes a brief break from our ongoing study through the book of Galatians, we turn our hearts and attention to a special Reformation Biographical Sermon Series, reflecting on the lives, ministries, and legacies of men whom God graciously used to reform and strengthen His Church.

Through their stories, we are reminded of God’s faithfulness in every generation and encouraged to stand firmly upon the truth of His Word, faithfully proclaim the gospel, and live for His glory.

In this sermon, we explore Martin Luther’s life and the truth of the gospel in Romans 1:16–17: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” Luther’s journey from deep spiritual anguish to discovering the righteousness of God revealed in the gospel became central to his stand during the Protestant Reformation. His life reminds us that salvation does not come through our own righteousness, good works, religious achievements, or human authority, but through Christ alone and His righteousness received by faith alone.

The message also challenges Christians today to live unashamedly for the gospel, with our consciences captive to the Word of God. Like Paul and Luther, we are called to treasure, study, proclaim, and stand firm on Scripture, even when doing so brings rejection, suffering, or persecution. The gospel is not only the power of God that saves us; it is the power that sustains and sanctifies us throughout our Christian lives. Ultimately, our confidence is not in ourselves or in any human leader, but in God’s Word and in Christ, so that God alone receives the glory.
