Ephesians 4:2

In Ephesians 4:2, Scripture calls believers to walk in a manner worthy of their calling by demonstrating humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another in love. Having recently completed a thirteen-month study through the book of James, the church pauses before beginning a new series through Galatians to reflect on a vital aspect of Christian living: how believers are to love and relate to one another within the body of Christ.

Throughout the book of James, believers were repeatedly challenged to examine the genuineness of their faith through the fruit it produces. This message continues that theme by reminding us that true faith is not merely seen in sound doctrine or biblical knowledge, but also in Christlike love expressed toward fellow believers. The unity of the church is not maintained through shared preferences or personalities, but through believers who intentionally walk in humility, patience, and sacrificial love.

In this portion of the message, we are reminded that genuine Christian love is one of the clearest evidences of a transformed heart. Those who have experienced the grace and mercy of God are called to extend that same grace and mercy to others. Biblical love goes beyond loving those who are easy to love; it includes bearing with the weaknesses, shortcomings, differences, and even offenses of others with patience and forgiveness.

The passage also emphasizes that bearing with one another requires both truth and love. Christians are not called to compromise biblical truth in order to preserve peace, nor are they called to use truth harshly and without compassion. Following the example of Christ, believers are called to uphold sound doctrine while exercising humility, gentleness, patience, and grace toward one another.

Scripture further reminds us that the church is not a gathering of perfect people, but of redeemed sinners who are being sanctified together. Because believers come from different backgrounds, personalities, and levels of maturity, patience and long-suffering are necessary for preserving unity within the body of Christ. Bearing with one another is therefore not merely an obligation, but a practical expression of gospel love.

Ultimately, this passage teaches that the health of the church depends not only upon doctrinal faithfulness, but also upon genuine Christlike love. May the Lord continue to shape us into a people who love one another deeply, forgive one another freely, and faithfully bear with one another in love for the glory of God and the good of His church.
