From The Same Mouth Come Blessing And Cursing (Part 2)

James 3:7-12

In this sermon, we continue our study of James 3:7–12 and are confronted once again with the sobering reality of the human tongue. James presses deeper into the seriousness of our speech by contrasting mankind’s ability to tame creation with our complete inability to tame the tongue. Though humanity was originally created to exercise dominion under God, this passage reminds us that sin has distorted that order, revealing how deeply fallen our nature truly is.

This message walks us through James’ argument that the tongue is restless, destructive, and beyond human control. Through Scripture, we are reminded that the problem of our speech is not merely behavioral, but deeply rooted in the condition of our hearts. James exposes the contradiction of blessing God while cursing those made in His image, showing that such inconsistency is incompatible with genuine faith. Our words inevitably reveal whether Christ truly reigns in our hearts or whether sin continues to exercise influence over our desires and responses.

More than a warning, this passage directs us to the gospel. While no one can fully tame the tongue, believers are reminded that transformation is not achieved by human effort but by the regenerating and sanctifying work of Christ. Secure in our position as redeemed children of God, yet still struggling in our fallen condition, we are called to pursue holiness with humility, repentance, and dependence on grace. James reminds us that true faith is made evident not only in what we believe, but in what we say and how we speak.

May this message lead us to deeper self examination, greater reverence for God’s holiness, and renewed dependence on Christ, who alone can transform our hearts and shape our words for His glory and the edification of His church.

About This Series

The Book of James

The book of James will look piercingly into our lives and how we behave and conduct ourselves, and will force us to see where we are not being who we ought to be in Christ. Are we truly living out in our lives Christ Jesus, who is truly living in us. My prayer is that as we go through this series—and according to the Lord’s will, I estimate this series to go on for about 23 Sundays at the minimum—that the Holy Spirit, as nobody else can, will do surgery on every one of our hearts and minds, so that Sunday after Sunday after Sunday, we are surrendering more and more of our hypocrisies and weaknesses in repentance to Him, but also maturing and being transformed more and more into Christlikeness.
