True Wisdom (Part 2)

James 3:13-18

In James 3, Scripture does not only define what true wisdom looks like, it also exposes what false wisdom produces. After establishing that true wisdom is marked by obedience, good conduct, and gentleness, James now turns our attention to the heart and confronts the wisdom that does not come from above.

In this second part of the message, we are warned that wisdom shaped by bitter jealousy, selfish ambition, and arrogance is not neutral or harmless. Scripture describes it plainly as earthly, natural, and demonic, because it produces disorder, division, and every evil practice. James reminds us that false wisdom often disguises itself behind religious language, knowledge, and outward activity, while the heart remains driven by pride and self-interest.

This message calls us to examine not only our conduct, but also the posture of our hearts. True wisdom is never separated from truth spoken in love, nor from gentleness rooted in humility. As believers, we are called to reflect the character of Christ by rejecting selfish ambition and embracing the wisdom that comes from above, wisdom that is pure, peaceable, merciful, and sincere.

May the Word of God search our hearts, guard us from false wisdom, and continually shape us to walk in humility, obedience, and reverential fear of the Lord.

About This Series

The Book of James

The book of James will look piercingly into our lives and how we behave and conduct ourselves, and will force us to see where we are not being who we ought to be in Christ. Are we truly living out in our lives Christ Jesus, who is truly living in us. My prayer is that as we go through this series—and according to the Lord’s will, I estimate this series to go on for about 23 Sundays at the minimum—that the Holy Spirit, as nobody else can, will do surgery on every one of our hearts and minds, so that Sunday after Sunday after Sunday, we are surrendering more and more of our hypocrisies and weaknesses in repentance to Him, but also maturing and being transformed more and more into Christlikeness.
