The Book of James

What Is The Source Of Conflicts? (Part 2)

James 4:2-3

In James 4, Scripture not only identifies the source of conflicts among God’s people, but presses further to expose how those conflicts intensify and take shape within the heart. After confronting us with the reality that quarrels do not originate from others but from desires within us, James now explains what those desires look like when left unchecked.

In this second part of the message, James addresses the destructive progression of sinful desire. Lust, envy, and covetousness are shown to be more than internal struggles; they are desires that give birth to quarrels, hostility, and even spiritual murder. These desires reveal a lack of contentment, a resistance to God’s will, and a heart that seeks fulfillment apart from submission to Him.

James also turns our attention to prayer, showing that unanswered prayers are often not the result of God’s unwillingness to give, but of hearts asking with wrong motives. When desires are shaped by self-interest rather than God’s glory, prayer becomes an expression of rebellion rather than dependence.

This message calls us to sober self-examination and humble repentance. True peace is not found in getting what we want, but in aligning our desires with the will of God. May the Lord search our hearts, expose sinful motives, and lead us to pursue holiness, contentment, and obedience by His grace alone.

About This Series

The Book of James

The book of James will look piercingly into our lives and how we behave and conduct ourselves, and will force us to see where we are not being who we ought to be in Christ. Are we truly living out in our lives Christ Jesus, who is truly living in us. My prayer is that as we go through this series—and according to the Lord’s will, I estimate this series to go on for about 23 Sundays at the minimum—that the Holy Spirit, as nobody else can, will do surgery on every one of our hearts and minds, so that Sunday after Sunday after Sunday, we are surrendering more and more of our hypocrisies and weaknesses in repentance to Him, but also maturing and being transformed more and more into Christlikeness.
