On Loyalty and Neutrality

We often assume that if someone remains kind to the person who wronged us, they are secretly picking a side against us. Scripture doesn't support that instinct.

Proverbs 17:9 says love covers a wrong, and one who repeats a matter separates close friends.

Jesus calls peacemakers blessed, not people who draw hard lines around every conflict (Matt 5:9). Paul kept working with Mark even after a sharp division with Barnabas over him (Acts 15).

Staying in relationship with more than one party in a conflict is not automatically compromise. Sometimes it is faithfulness.

At the same time, Scripture is not neutral about unrepentant sin or persistent error.

Titus 3:10 says to have nothing more to do with a divisive person after a first and second warning.

2 Thessalonians 3:14 says to keep away from one who refuses correction. Paul names names when the error is public and ongoing (1 Tim 1:20). Clarity is required. Vague niceness toward continued sin is not love.

So the question is never "who is still willing to be kind to the person who wronged me." The question is "what has this person actually said and affirmed when asked directly."

Someone can be kind to both sides without endorsing wrong on either side. That is not betrayal. That is often the harder, more Christlike path.

Don't measure loyalty by who someone associates with. Measure it by what they are willing to say is true.
