Thinking Biblically:

Be Careful With Theological Arrogance

Seeing “Christians” respond not with rejoicing over a public testimony of God’s saving grace in the life of a local celebrity Joross Gamboa, featured in a recent Toni Talks episode, but instead immediately making much about his supposed incorrect eschatology… this friends, is the arrogance of theology on display.

When the transforming work of the Triune God is evident in a sinner saved by grace, yet what is highlighted are secondary doctrines and an insistence that “we are right and all others are wrong,” this exposes not discernment but immaturity, pride and a lack of gospel joy.

The Scriptures remind us:

- Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for straining out a gnat but swallowing a camel (Matthew 23:24). They focused on lesser matters while missing weightier truths.

- Paul rejoiced whenever Christ was preached, even if motives or secondary matters were imperfect (Philippians 1:15-18).

- We are called to “rejoice with those who rejoice” (Romans 12:15), especially when a sinner testifies of mercy and grace.

- Knowledge without love “puffs up,” but love “builds up” (1 Corinthians 8:1).

- We are exhorted to “maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:2-3) with humility and patience.

Brothers and sisters, theological precision matters deeply. We should earnestly pursue sound doctrine (Titus 1:9).

But when secondary issues overshadow the primary glories of repentance, redemption, and the power of the gospel to save, something in our hearts must be examined.

Pastors must intentionally shepherd their flock so that doctrinal zeal does not become spiritual pride.

Believers must be lovingly corrected when they consistently exhibit a spirit that majors on minors, criticizes the brethren, and fails to rejoice in God’s work of salvation.

May we remember the words of Christ to His disciples when they attempted to forbid others ministering in His name:

“Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.” (Luke 9:50)

And may God grant us grace to discern what is primary and rejoice whenever Christ is magnified, while discussing and correcting secondary doctrines with humility, gentleness, and patience.

Lord, protect us from pride masquerading as theological conviction.

May we grow in maturity, in love for the brethren, and in awe at Your transforming grace.

Rejoicing for the joy inside this man’s heart and praise God for the platform created by Toni Gonzaga, allowing such testimonies of the power of the gospel to be heard.

All believers are saved by grace alone through faith alone. What have we to brag or boast about?

May we all be found faithful in Christ alone for the glory of God alone!

About Thinking Biblically

Thinking Biblically

Thinking Biblically is a ministry which aims to point people to Christ and scripture in answering and addressing the realities of this fallen world. Every 4th Sunday of the Month, CCRC holds a question and answer for its flock right after service to help people think biblically on issues and matters relevant to people. There are also blogs and articles made under this same spirit of pointing people to the Word on anything and everything. May these articles and discussions exalt the name of Christ and His Words in your life!
