Biblical Counseling and Discretion

Discretion is not the same thing as secrecy.

When someone shares a struggle with you in the context of the church, that conversation is not happening in a vacuum. It's happening within a body, under shepherds who will one day give an account for the souls entrusted to them (Hebrews 13:17). Counseling in a church setting is not a private professional relationship. It's an extension of the church's shepherding ministry.

So when something serious comes up, unrepentant sin, danger to the person or to others, sin that will eventually require a Matthew 18 process if it stays hidden, keeping it "just between us" out of a desire to be discreet is not actually love. It quietly cuts the elders out of a role God gave them, and it leaves the flock unprotected from something they may need to be protected from.

Real discretion is wise about timing, tone, and how something is shared. It is never wise to withhold from the people God has made accountable for the sheep.

If you're walking with someone, love them enough to bring it into the light where it belongs, not to yourself, but to the shepherds who carry that weight with you.

"Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account." (Hebrews 13:17)
