Church Hurt

As we gather for our Thinking Biblically session today, we turn our attention to a painful yet important reality often experienced within the life of the church, church hurt.

Our theme, “Church Hurt,” is not intended to magnify bitterness, division, or personal grievances, but to examine this issue through the light of Scripture and the gospel of Jesus Christ. In a fallen world, even within Christ’s visible church, believers may experience wounds caused by sin, misunderstandings, disappointments, spiritual immaturity, or failures among fellow members and leaders. These realities can leave deep scars, confusion, and discouragement.

Yet Scripture reminds us that while the church on earth is imperfect, Christ Himself remains faithful, holy, and loving toward His people. Our hope is not ultimately anchored in men, personalities, or institutions, but in Christ, the Head of the church, who purchased His bride with His own blood.

As we think biblically about church hurt, we are reminded that the gospel does not ignore pain, but addresses it truthfully. God calls His people to repentance where sin exists, to forgiveness where wrong has been committed, to humility in our relationships, and to perseverance in loving Christ and His church despite the failures of men.

May this session help us respond not according to bitterness, pride, or worldly thinking, but according to the wisdom of God revealed in His Word. And may we grow in grace, truth, unity, and Christlike love as members of His church.
