Dear Penitent | The Heart Of A True Penitent

As we gather for our Thinking Biblically session last March 22, 2026, we turn our attention to a vital doctrine that lies at the very heart of the gospel, repentance.

Our theme, “Dear Penitent: The Heart of a True Penitent,” calls us not merely to consider outward expressions of sorrow, but to examine the true nature of repentance as defined by Scripture. In a time where many equate repentance with visible acts, religious rituals, or emotional displays, especially during the Holy Week season, we must return to a thoroughly biblical and God centered understanding.

According to Scripture, and as rightly emphasized in Reformed theology, man in his natural state is not merely weak, but spiritually dead, unable and unwilling to turn to God on his own. Therefore, true repentance does not originate from human will or effort, but from the sovereign grace of God. It is the fruit of regeneration, where God, by His Spirit, gives new life, removes the heart of stone, and grants a heart that now sees sin rightly and turns to Him.

Thus, repentance is not the cause of salvation, but its result. It flows from a heart that has already been renewed by grace. The true penitent is one who has been brought from death to life, from blindness to sight, and now, by that same grace, continually turns away from sin, not to earn God’s favor, but because he has already received mercy in Christ.

This brings us to the questions that shape our discussion. How do we biblically evaluate and respond to expressions of repentance that are primarily outward or ritual? In light of the truth that repentance flows from regeneration, how do we discern whether what is displayed externally reflects a heart that has truly been transformed by grace? And ultimately, what defines a true penitent according to Scripture?

As we consider these things, may we be careful not only to assess what we see around us, but to examine our own hearts. For a true penitent is not one who seeks to earn forgiveness, but one who, having been graciously awakened by God, now sees the weight of sin against a holy God, clings to Christ alone, and walks in a life marked by ongoing repentance and obedience, all to the glory of God.

About Thinking Biblically

Thinking Biblically

Thinking Biblically is a ministry which aims to point people to Christ and scripture in answering and addressing the realities of this fallen world. Every 4th Sunday of the Month, CCRC holds a question and answer for its flock right after service to help people think biblically on issues and matters relevant to people. There are also blogs and articles made under this same spirit of pointing people to the Word on anything and everything. May these articles and discussions exalt the name of Christ and His Words in your life!
