Forgiveness and Process

Reflecting on a topic in my Biblical Counseling and Theology class this morning, Matthew 18 and Luke 17 are not two separate approaches to conflict. They are one command, seen from two sides.

Luke 17:3-4 gives the heart God requires. Rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. Even if he sins against you seven times in a day and comes back seven times saying "I repent," forgive him. There is no limit on this. No keeping score. No point where you're allowed to stop being ready to forgive.

Matthew 18:15-17 gives the process. Go to him privately, just the two of you. If he won't listen, bring one or two others. If he still won't listen, tell it to the church. If he won't listen to the church, treat him as you would someone outside the faith.

Most read those steps as a way to get people out of the church. But that's not what the passage is doing. Every step is still aimed at the same outcome Luke 17 describes. You widen the circle because the smaller circle didn't produce repentance, not because you've given up on it. The goal at every stage is to win your brother back.

Luke 17 on its own can also be misused. Staying silent when someone sins against you, never naming it, and calling that forgiveness is not what this text is describing. That's avoidance. Biblical forgiveness assumes the rebuke already happened. You can't forgive what you were never honest about.

Matthew 18 is what love does while someone has not yet repented. Luke 17 is what love does the moment they do. Drop the process and you get people who avoid conflict and call it grace. Drop the heart and you get people who run a procedure and call it holiness.

Scripture asks for both. Honest confrontation, and complete forgiveness
