Is There Power In Showing Up?

I recently heard a worship presider encourage their attendees by declaring to them that, “there is power when we show up.” In reference to going to church and going to an area where they can be prayed for.

Let’s look at this biblically.

1. It places power in human action, not in God

Saying “there is power when we show up” implies that our presence activates something spiritual.

But Scripture consistently teaches that power belongs to God alone, not to human effort or attendance.

* Psalm 62:11 - “Power belongs to God.”

* John 15:5 - “Apart from Me you can do nothing.”

We don’t generate power by showing up. At best, we are dependent recipients, not contributors.

2. It subtly promotes a works-based mindset

The phrase suggests:

If I show up then something powerful happens

That’s dangerously close to a formula. But the Bible rejects any idea that spiritual outcomes are triggered by human effort.

* Romans 9:16 - “It depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.”

* 1 Corinthians 3:7 - “Neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.”

Faithfulness matters but it is not the source of power.

3. It confuses means with source

Yes, believers are called to gather:

* Hebrews 10:25 - Do not neglect meeting together

But gathering is a means of grace, not the power itself.

The danger is this shift:

* Biblical: God works powerfully through His Word and Spirit when we gather

* Misleading: Our showing up is what creates power

Those are not the same.

4. It risks man-centered worship

Worship becomes subtly about:

* Our attendance

* Our participation

* Our effort

Instead of:

* God’s glory

* God’s initiative

* God’s power

* John 4:24 - Worship is “in spirit and truth,” not in mere physical presence.

You can “show up” and still be spiritually dead (Isaiah 29:13).

5. It ignores the necessity of the Holy Spirit

Power in Scripture is always tied to the Spirit of God, not human presence.

* Zechariah 4:6 - “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord.”

* Acts 1:8 - “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.”

Power comes from God showing up, not us.

A more biblical way to say it

Instead of:

“There is power when we show up”

A more faithful statement would be:

“God works powerfully through His Word and Spirit, and we humbly gather to depend on Him.”

Showing up is good. It’s obedient. It’s right.

But it is not powerful in itself.

The moment we attach power to our action, even subtly, we begin drifting from:

* God-centered worship to man-centered thinking…

And that’s a shift worth correcting.

About Thinking Biblically

Thinking Biblically

Thinking Biblically is a ministry which aims to point people to Christ and scripture in answering and addressing the realities of this fallen world. Every 4th Sunday of the Month, CCRC holds a question and answer for its flock right after service to help people think biblically on issues and matters relevant to people. There are also blogs and articles made under this same spirit of pointing people to the Word on anything and everything. May these articles and discussions exalt the name of Christ and His Words in your life!
