The Question Beneath Every Question

Every theological debate, whether about spiritual gifts, counseling, gender roles, or church discipline, eventually traces back to one foundational question:

Is Scripture truly the sufficient and inerrant Word of God?

How you answer that question will shape everything else. It will define your presuppositions before you even open your Bible. It will determine your methodology before you engage a single argument.

If Scripture is sufficient, you approach every question of life and godliness by asking, what does the text say? And you treat that answer as final. Not because you are rigid or anti-intellectual, but because you trust that God has spoken completely and clearly in His Word. You do not need to supplement it with ongoing revelation, therapeutic frameworks, or cultural consensus.

But when sufficiency is quietly abandoned, something always rushes in to fill the gap. It may be personal experience. It may be tradition elevated above the text. It may be the latest findings from secular psychology. It may be a prophetic word that “confirms” what someone already wanted to do.

The counselor who believes the Bible is enough will sit with a suffering person and open the Word. The counselor who does not will eventually reach for something else.

The preacher who believes the Bible is enough will exposit the text and trust the Spirit to apply it. The preacher who does not will drift toward what moves people rather than what changes them.

The Westminster Confession does not open with God. It opens with Scripture because the divines understood that everything else depends on getting this right first.

Settle this question, and you will find that many other questions begin to settle themselves.
