Today’s devotion is from 2 Timothy 2:5 (LSB): “Also, if anyone competes as an athlete, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.”

Let us pray.
Lord, we thank You for bringing us together as men who desire to know You through Your Word and to live that out, even here in this basketball fellowship. Thank You for the game that we enjoy and for the fellowship that You, in Your mercy, have given us. Use even this time, Lord, not just for play, but to shape us as men who follow You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Brothers, this letter comes from Paul near the end of his life. He has endured hardship, he has suffered, and yet he remained faithful. And now he passes this on to Timothy, to live faithfully as one called by God.

He gives three images: a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer. But for us, especially in this setting, we see the picture of the athlete.

Athletes are marked by endurance, strength, and discipline, and Paul connects this with the call to suffer hardship. No one becomes an athlete without endurance. Every training, every game, every competition requires it. In the same way, the Christian life is a life of endurance, not just lasting long, but remaining faithful in whatever situation God has placed us in.

And we endure not because we are strong in ourselves, but because God preserves us. It is His grace that sustains us and His strength that keeps us. We are also called to be strong, but not in our own strength. Because if we rely on ourselves, we will fall short, and not only fall short, it can lead to failure and even sin. But the Lord supplies what we lack, so that in Christ we have the strength to endure whatever He ordains.

And like an athlete, we are to be quick, not just physically, but in obedience—quick to respond, quick to follow, and quick to obey. When the Lord calls, we do not delay.

But Paul makes this clear: the athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. Brothers, we do not define what faithfulness is. God has already defined it in His Word. It is not enough to endure, it is not enough to be strong, and it is not enough to be active. If it is not according to the Word of God, it is not faithfulness, because the goal is not just to endure, but to endure faithfully.

So even as we play today, this game we enjoy and this fellowship God has given us, let it remind us to endure faithfully, to be strong in the Lord, and to be quick in obedience according to the calling that Christ has given us.

And brothers, we thank God for this fellowship, men who not only enjoy basketball, but who gather around the Word. We thank God for the men of Capitol Commons Reformed Church, our brothers from Heroes Church, Cruciform Church, and all who are with us today. If you are looking for a church, we invite you to join us. Capitol Commons Reformed Church meets every Sunday at 4:00 PM at Enderun Design & Innovation Campus. You are welcome to join us. May this not just be a game, but a gathering of men being shaped by the Word of God.

Let us pray.
Lord, thank You for this game, for this fellowship, and for these men. As we play, remind us of the life You have called us to live, a life of endurance, strength, and obedience. Help us to live faithfully according to Your Word and for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
