Today’s devotion is from Hebrews 12:1–2 (LSB):
“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Let us pray.
Lord, we thank You for bringing us together as men and women who desire to know You through Your Word and to live that out, even here in this fellowship. Thank You for the time, the activity, and the relationships that You, in Your mercy, have given us. Use even this time, Lord, not just for running, but to shape us as people who follow You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Brothers and sisters, this passage comes from the book of Hebrews, where the author has already spent many chapters explaining who Christ is. He shows that Christ is the better mediator, the better high priest, and the one who establishes a better covenant. And here in chapter 12, beginning with the word “Therefore,” we are given the response to all of that truth—how we are to live in light of who Christ is.

This shows us that knowing Christ and knowing His truth matters. Doctrine matters. Understanding who Christ is has value. But that knowledge is not meant to remain only in our minds—it is meant to lead to a response. And the response the author calls us to is this: to run the race with endurance.

And we must understand what that endurance means. This is not just about longevity—just going the distance. It is about consistency in living faithfully over time. It is about continuing to follow Christ, day after day, in obedience, even when it is difficult, even when it is costly.

Along the way, we are told to lay aside every weight and the sin that easily entangles us. These are the things that slow us down in our walk with Christ. This is not just about running physically, it is about living faithfully—removing anything that hinders us from following Him as we should.

And the key to this kind of endurance is this: fixing our eyes on Jesus. Our endurance does not come from our own strength. Because if we rely on ourselves, we will fall short, and not only fall short, it can lead to failure and even sin. But the Lord supplies what we lack. It is His grace that sustains us, and His strength that keeps us. Christ Himself is our example. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, despised the shame, and now sits at the right hand of God.

So this means that in our lives, we are called to run with endurance—not just lasting long, but living consistently and faithfully according to His Word. We are called to lay aside not just obvious sin, but even the weights that slow us down. And in whatever situation God has placed us in, we are called to fix our eyes on Christ, not on ourselves, not on others, but on Him.
Because the goal is not just to go the distance, but to live consistently and faithfully, fixing our eyes on Jesus according to the Word of God.

So even as we run today, this activity and this fellowship God has given us should remind us of the life we are called to live. And we thank God for this fellowship—people who not only run together, but who gather around the Word and encourage one another toward faithfulness.

Let us pray.
Lord, thank You for this time, for this fellowship, and for everyone here. As we run, remind us of the life You have called us to live—a life of consistency, faithfulness, and eyes fixed on Christ. Help us to lay aside every weight and every sin, and to live faithfully according to Your Word and for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
